We will make "our" railway even more beautiful

Don't hesitate and join your fellow volunteers on May 24th as part of our action Steelmakers for Košice 2025. This year again, we want to help improve the unique historical children's railway.

What activities can we look forward to this year?

At the Čermeľ station, our professionals will traditionally start maintaining and repairing the historic locomotives Katka and Krutwig.

Another group will strengthen the slope with sleepers, move the wood and clean the area around the wood warehouse.

On the way to the Alpinka station, a few of us will get off and take care of cleaning the track from invasive trees and weeds.

The most work awaits us at the Alpinka station.

First, we will sand and then paint two wooden containers and paint another container green.

We will make a thermowood floor near the waiting room.

You can register for this activity via our X App Košice starting on April 15th.

Let the steam push!

Did you know that:

The steam locomotive U35.1, which ran in the Čermeľské údolí (Čermeľ Valley), was built in 1872 for the Štiavnica Railway, on which it operated until 1949. After the Štiavnica Railway was abolished, it was used on the Gelnica line, where it served only as a heating boiler. In 1956, it was transferred to the Pioneer Railway, in exchange for the locomotive U36.004, which was more suitable for the Gelnica line. It served in Čermeľ until the end of steam operation in 1961, and in 1962 it provided a backup in case of engine failure. Unfortunately, in 1963, it was scrapped. The name Katka (she was the first Katka on the children's railway) was given after the daughter of Ing. Janík, the main initiator of the construction of the pioneer railway, who was born at that time.

The steam locomotive U35.104 was also built in 1897 for the Štiavnica railway. After the Štiavnica line was abolished in 1949, the locomotive was moved to Gelnica, where it served until 1955, when it was chosen as the first locomotive for the newly built pioneer railway.

On the pioneer railway, it was given the name Anička and served there until 1961. Unfortunately, after it was decommissioned, it was also burned and scrapped.
