The Košice Zoo has been a favorite place for many years for steelmakers who are no strangers to volunteer work and want to involve their children in it.
This should also be the case during this year's event, Steelmakers for Košice. We chose the conditional method because the gates of not only Košice, but also all other zoos in Slovakia have been closed due to measures related to the occurrence of the foot-and-mouth disease virus. It is not yet certain when zoos will be open to the public again. We believe that the measures will no longer apply on May 24. We are monitoring the situation and will share any news with you. We will inform everyone who chooses the Košice Zoo as part of their volunteer activity in a timely manner.
Volunteers will work with lynxes
The Košice Zoo welcomes the help of our volunteers every year. Last year, we helped beautify the breeding facility for chinstrap penguins. This year, a Carpathian lynx enclosure is being prepared for our skilled hands. The breeding facility, with an area of about 1,800 m2, is 17 years old and is currently inhabited by the same-aged female Kaira.
"The fencing, wooden lookouts and, last but not least, the area around the lynx breeding facility need maintenance. It needs to be cleared of invasive trees and the terrain adjusted so that visitors can easily reach the European bison. This is a new visitor section that the garden opened last year. The garden will welcome volunteers to work on protective coatings for the fence, wooden lookouts, and cleaning and clearing unwanted and invasive trees. The construction of the lynx breeding facility, similar to the penguins, was also significantly supported by U. S. Steel Košice. In case of rain, we will focus on hygienic coatings in the stables for ungulates,"Eva Malešová from the Košice Zoo presented the facility.
"We always look forward to the work of the volunteers - steelworkers. A great and well-mannered group of people come to us. We meet many of them regularly. They leave behind the mark of quality work and a great atmosphere," added the director of the Košice Zoo, Erich Kočner.
You will be able to register for this location from April 15th.
