Hands for greenery

The Botanical Garden of UPJŠ Košice is now an integral part of the Volunteer Days that we organize every year. If you want to spend the morning in its pleasant environment, improve its area and meet new people, sign up for the event Steelmakers' for Košice, which will take place on Saturday, May 24th. Registration will open soon, in mid-April.

And what awaits us in the botanical garden? This time, our base will be the main gazebo opposite the water surface with water lilies.

We will focus mainly on the treatment of wooden structures. The gazebo itself, park benches and information boards require sanding and new paint. At the same time, we will renew the park paths, which need to be leveled, weeded and supplemented with aggregate.

Passionate gardeners will also come into their own; their help will be welcome when planting plants into large flower pots in the greenhouse. Its crops that will be used at the fruit exhibition from late August to mid-September. Substrates for planting and filling the raised beds will also need to be prepared. Two really large palm trees in the greenhouse also need new substrate. For those who relax while spitting out the weeds, there is a tree ornamental nursery where they can do so.

We can do most of this work in inclement weather, under the roof of the greenhouses. A backup plan is to replace the mesh on one of the aviaries under the roof of the Mini ZOO.

Please accept an invitation to the Botanical Garden from its deputy director, Ing. Robert Gregorek, PhD.:
“The Botanical Garden is already in full bloom in May, if we are lucky, we will enjoy nice weather. We are looking forward to the steelworkers, they have already helped us take care of the wooden structures in the past. The supporting parts of the beekeeping educational trail and the dendrological educational trail, the gazebo, the benches in the forest park require treatment. We can take care of the park benches even in rainy weather, so we are prepared for this alternative so that we can do some useful work under the roof. The park paths also require careful care at least once a year. With the repeated efforts of the steelworkers, they are built in such a form that it will really only be a cosmetic surface treatment. It will be necessary to remove any weeds, level the surface and spread a layer of new aggregate in some sections. In the rush of other activities and flower care, we do not always have time to cover these routine maintenance tasks, so such a volunteer day is a great help. We really care that our fellow steelworkers feel good here and that, in addition to doing some useful work, it was also a pleasant social gathering and that they enjoyed this area.”
