Last Thursday, as in previous years, a group of determined environmentalists rolled up their sleeves again and started a job that is not their regular job and they certainly do not have it listed in their job positions. However, these colleagues from GM's environmental department already have environmental protection in their DNA.
The car parks at the entrances at gates No. 1, 3 and 4 are places through which not only the company's employees, but also suppliers and trucks pass to take our products to customers. Traditionally, they are also places where our colleagues will head equipped with protective clothing, gloves and plastic bags as part of the regular spring cleaning campaign.
Fewer plastic bottles
"We can find various types of waste around the parking lots. These are plastic bottles, cigarette butts, snack wrappers or old newspapers. This mess not only spoils the appearance of the surroundings, but also endangers the environment. Since plastic bottles began to be deposited in Slovakia, there have been fewer of them, but we still find plastic bottles and cans from Hungary, Poland or the Czech Republic... ," says Beáta Szilágyiová from the GM Environmental Department.
How to fight windmills
General manager Miloš Fodor adds: "People from the Gombida social enterprise take care of routine cleaning work in these areas as well. They do their job very well. But sometimes it's like fighting windmills. The space, which will be perfectly cleaned, will resemble one big landfill again in a few weeks."
Glass and tires too
The total amount of waste, which was collected by 24 people in 5 hours, filled a container with a volume of 7 m3 (waste weight 820 kg), plus they filled 7 more pieces of 100 liter bags with glass and over a dozen tires from cars and trucks. They collected various types of waste from diapers to ordinary household waste.
Just a few extra steps
Is it so hard to throw garbage in the trash? Certainly not. Sometimes you may need to take a few extra steps, but that shouldn't be a reason why we throw what we have in our hands right on the ground. Clean common areas and a healthy environment certainly deserve this little effort.
