Earth Day is commemorated every year on April 22. It is the largest global environmental movement that draws attention to the importance of nature protection, climate stability and responsible human behavior. The global theme for 2026 is "Our Energy, Our Planet", which highlights that each of us has the power to influence the future of the Earth – whether it's energy decisions, consumption, or daily habits.
In Slovakia, Earth Day is traditionally associated with a number of activities – from cleaning public spaces to educational programs for children and youth. Several interesting events are being prepared in 2026. One of them is the nationwide April challenge "We Grow Together", organized by the children's organization FÉNIX. A three-day event "Every Earth Day 2026" will take place in Trnava, organized by the SaUvedom civic association.
In USSK, Earth Day is traditionally celebrated by planting trees. Last week, GM Environment Department employees planted 110 shrubs (golden rain, privet and quince) in the area of modified slag management to help reduce dust in the surrounding environment.
The year 2026 continues in a period of significant climate challenges – extreme weather fluctuations, biodiversity loss, or pressure on natural resources are a reality that cannot be ignored. The theme "Our Energy, Our Planet" reminds us that change does not start in the big decisions of governments, but in the everyday choices of individuals.
This includes saving energy, reducing waste, supporting renewable sources, but also educating the children who will make up the next generation. Earth Day is not just a one-time holiday, but a reminder that the planet needs our attention every day.
