Earth Day: A small tree, a big change

April 22 is a day that reminds us every year how important it is to protect our planet. Earth Day is not only a symbolic holiday, but also a call to action. This year, and this is becoming a tradition, we decided to celebrate it in the greenest way – by planting trees.

Trees are the lungs of our Earth. They absorb carbon dioxide, produce oxygen, retain water, and provide a home for countless species of animals. Their importance for a healthy environment is invaluable. Every single tree planted is a step towards cleaner air, a cooler climate and a better future.

Employees of the GME department planted 50 young small-leaved linden trees yesterday, which will grow together with us and thicken the protective greenery around U. S. Steel Košice.

Planting the trees was not only an ecological gesture, but also a demonstration of our conviction. We believe that every tree planted is a symbol of hope and responsibility towards future generations, slowing down climate change and promoting biodiversity.

Do you know what are the main functions of trees in nature and for humans?

Organic:

They produce oxygen – through photosynthesis, they convert carbon dioxide into the oxygen we breathe.

They absorb CO₂ – they help reduce the greenhouse effect and slow down climate change.

They retain water – they protect the soil from drying out, erosion and flooding.

They improve the quality of the soil – the roots release nutrients and support the soil microflora.

They cool the climate – their shade and evaporation of water from the leaves reduce the ambient temperature.

They trap dust and pollutants – they clean the air of dust, heavy metals and toxins.

Home for animals – they provide shelter, food and nesting sites for birds, insects and mammals.

Aesthetic and psychological:

They enhance the beauty of the landscape – they are a natural decoration of towns and villages.

They have a calming effect – the view of greenery reduces stress and improves mood.

They support recreation – they provide a pleasant environment for relaxation, sports or hiking.

Economic:

Source of wood and fruits – provide raw materials for construction, heating and production of products.

They increase the value of real estate – houses in greenery are more attractive and valuable.

They support biodiversity – forests are the basis of a sustainable economy and natural cycles.
