The State Philharmonic Košice has prepared a very interesting concert for the beginning of December called Karvay Plays Vaska. It will take place on December 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the House of Arts.

The program will include the Small Suite with Passacaglia, Op. 3 ESD 48b. Eugen Suchoň and the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra "Distant Light" by Pēteris Vasks. The solo part will be performed by the Slovak violin virtuoso Dalibor Karvay, who became the first Slovak in history to become the concertmaster of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. At the end, Dvořák's Symphony No. 8, G major Op. 88 will be performed. The concert will be conducted by Tomáš Brauner.

The attractiveness of Suchoň's work Small Suite with Passacaglia lies in the peculiar harmonic colourfulness presented in a relatively simple processing and a distinctive use of Slovak songs.

The violin concerto Distant Light was composed by the Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks for the world-renowned virtuoso Gidon Kremer. His soulful, melancholy passion remains key to understanding Vasks' relentless quest to reconnect with nature, spirituality, and ideals.

Dvořák's Symphony No. 8 is a work full of joy of life and admiration for natural beauty and Czech folk music. The symphony is characterized by the variability of moods, which alternate in a varied sequence from pastoral images through dance intonations to dramatically tense surfaces.

The concert will also be preceded by a pre-concert meeting with dramaturgy lecturer Peter Katina at 6:00 p.m. in the Small Hall of the House of Arts. This meeting is intended for all concert-goers who want to learn more about the music that will be heard at the concerts.
