Waste management is not one of the most attractive topics in the field of environmental protection, yet it is just as important as the protection of air, soil or water. We are an industrial company that produces waste and must be able to handle it. Last year, we produced 693,663 tons, plus 2,147,889 tons of by-products, which are used directly in our facilities or sold to external customers for further processing. Waste is also a material that has its value.
We won't "miss waste"
"Unlike, for example, water or air, waste is what we do not "miss". The pollution 
that is released into the air dissipates, although it can of course return in the form of deposition gradient and dust that falls nearby. The water flows down the rivers into the sea, but the waste we produce and cannot find a way to use it remains here, behind our doors. Our great advantage is that we have a landfill. Of course, landfills are waste disposal facilities, but that shouldn't make us think that it's okay, we have a landfill, so let's throw it there," says Miloš Fodor, General Manager for the Environment.
As far as waste is concerned, we can simply say that these are those leftovers from production that, for some reason, do not meet the conditions for by-products. Last year, out of the total volume of 693,663 tons of waste, 689,480 tons were waste categories. "O" – other, i.e. not hazardous waste.
Of the total amount of waste, we recovered 53%
By-products are used for example in construction, cement or other building materials. An interesting fact is that the dust from the dedusting of the regeneration station is used to clarify wastewater. This is interesting because the dust we capture is further used to protect the environment.
The most important projects completed last year
Work continued on landscaping in the southern and south-eastern part of the Dry Heap body using output material from the mobile stabilization line of Environcentrum s.r.o. (MRV) and grassing of these areas.
Landscaping of the first stage of the steel slag area (the southernmost part towards the village of Veľká Ida) was carried out in connection with the use of MRV and recyclate from sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants and greenery was planted.
By recovering sludge from the wastewater treatment plant, we have obtained more than 435 thousand tons of material suitable for reclamation purposes since the start of the process. The use of this material in the premises of the Dry Heap has achieved a reduction in dust, as well as greening of the slopes of the heap on an area of approximately 143,300 m2.
In the waste recovery facility, 950,700 tons of waste (rolling scales) from an external waste producer were recovered in the "Preparation of Production" plant last year.
Priorities for this year
The stabilization of sludge from the Sokoľany WWTP on a mobile stabilization line and the processing of waste on the stable stabilization line of Environcentrum s.r.o. will continue.
Landscaping work will continue on the body of the Dry Heap, a steel debris site associated with the planting of greenery.
We haven't had an environmental accident since 2008
